A favorite community art event returns
For almost as long as this writer can recall, the lower level of Marquette’s Peter White Public Library has been a center for the arts in this Upper Michigan town. In fact, the space is home to the Marquette Arts and Culture offices. There are class rooms, smaller meeting rooms, larger events rooms, and two galleries.
One of the galleries is the Deo Gallery, named after long time arts supporters Jack and Cindy Deo. For years, the Deo Gallery has been the home to The Lake Superior Art Association’s Members’ show. Every year, LSAA members show their latest and best work in a beautiful gallery setting.
Well, every year except 2020 and 2021.
This year, the LSAA Members show was back after a COVID19 break. A reception and prize ceremony was held on January 13th.
A wonderful variety of artists participated, creating and displaying some of the Marquette area’s most beautiful art work.
Gallery Marquette Artists Join the Lake Superior Art Association Show
Gallery Marquette artist Gail Mahan showed this beautiful abstract acrylic painting, entitled “Act 1”
Gail is a landscape painter and multimedia artist whose primary focus and passion is the outdoors. She prefers Plein Air painting and oils as a medium but uses other media as well, including computer generated art. Gail takes her inspiration from wildlife, and the lakes and streams that she calls her childhood playground.
Gallery Marquette artist John French entered this oil painting of Lake Superior called “Stepped to the Edge”.
John is an oil painter who draws on inspiration from hikes and road trips with his four dogs. His paintings are deep and rich, with many layers and details. His work often depicts quiet, peaceful landscapes and nature. He often layers a hazy blue background with a colorful, contrasting foreground.
Last, but certainly not least...
Congratulations go to Gallery Marquette artist Colleen Maki! Colleen won an Honorable Mention prize for her haunting photo “Winter Shoreline”!
This photo depicts a ghostly ore freighter approaching an icy, alien, frozen shore.
Colleen is a nature photographer and painter who’s love for the outdoors shines through all of her work. Colleen’s connection with the environment of the Upper Peninsula shows through her artwork as she photographs the intricate details of nature and the astonishing macro beauty of Lake Superior.
Congratulations indeed to all of the winners, and participants, of the 2022 LSAA Members Show!
